Child Autism Spectrum Assessment Screener

What: The Child Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Screener identifies an area of functioning around:

  • social cues and social communication difficulties,
  • intense and obsessive interests,
  • difficulties with change, needing things to be “just so”
  • hyperactivity
  • repetitive behaviour
  • sensory sensitivities
  • learning difficulties

Why: This Screener is useful for assessment of ASD. The assessment results will determine the need for further investigation or not. If the assessment results point towards ASD, a diagnostic assessment will be recommended.

How: The assessments in the ASD Screener can be completed online by the child’s parent/carer and their school teacher. Once all the assessments are completed, we will compile the results into a written report. The report offers diagnostic considerations for further investigation and suggestions for management in various environments, and recommendations for further assessment/intervention. We will then schedule a Feedback Session so that your treating psychologist can interpret the report findings. Rebates may be applied to this Feedback session if you have a current Mental Health Care Plan or Private Health Insurance.

Who:  Children aged 4-12

Description

Important information about Assessment Screeners

An Assessment Screener is a series of validated psychometric assessment tools designed to ascertain the presence and severity of a number of common mental health problems. They range from basic screeners, providing general information about a client’s mental health, to assessments for specific behavioural problems, to our more comprehensive suites – assessing clients with multiple and complex presentations.

Our assessment suites act as a complement to other service provision and can help free up time for service providers, parents and schools alike. Our responsive assessment reports, based on validated psychometric measures, can also provide information regarding whether more extensive testing (e.g., IQ or achievement tests) is needed. The added benefit, is that our clients will have all of the information they need (in report form) in order to implement an integrated and effective care plan. The results can help to effectively direct interventions or clinical care and may also form an important part of obtaining a diagnosis and/or support funding (e.g., NDIS funding).

Please note; there are natural limitations to psychometric measures with our online assessments, which means they are a screening instrument only and cannot and should not be used alone to make a mental health diagnosis. However, the scores from the assessments are an essential part of the process to obtain a diagnosis. A diagnosis is possible with the assessment results, together with a professional observation of a suitably qualified health professional (clinical psychologist, paediatrician, psychiatrist) to make a judgement regarding the appropriateness of a diagnosis. Further costs may be incurred for additional testing and assessments.
