Building confidence and connection through Mental Health First Aid

For the past seven years, I’ve had the privilege of delivering the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course through In Minds Training. In that time, I’ve watched awareness and engagement grow, and I’ve heard countless stories of how these skills have been put into action; whether it’s supporting a colleague, checking in on a friend, or stepping in during a crisis.

But for me, MHFA isn’t just something I teach; it’s one of the main reasons I got into this space in the first place.

My journey into Mental Health First Aid

Before becoming a facilitator, I was playing professional rugby league in England and thinking about what life would look like after retirement. I had a background in education and had always been passionate about mental health and wellbeing. At the time, one of my teammates was going through a tough period, and my football manager suggested I sit in on a Mental Health First Aid course; both to learn for myself and to be able to support my teammate.

I still remember that training vividly…

  1. I connected deeply with the facilitator.

  2. I learned so much about mental health and how to respond.

  3. Most importantly, I realised: I can use this for myself, for my family, and in my workplace/football team.

These skills helped me grow as a leader, created more empathy for others, and equipped me to support people throughout the years that followed. That experience is why I’m so passionate about bringing MHFA to others today.

Why Mental Health First Aid?

Mental health challenges affect us all, whether directly or indirectly. Yet many people don’t feel equipped to respond when someone is struggling. That’s where MHFA comes in.

By enhancing awareness and knowledge, this course empowers individuals to:

  • Recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health concerns

  • Provide practical support in everyday situations

  • Confidently intervene in mental health crises

  • Promote early help-seeking and reduce stigma

  • Prioritise their own wellbeing

Who is it for?

The course is designed for adults supporting adults; from workplaces and community groups to leaders, managers, and individuals who simply want to make a positive difference.

  • Audience: SafeWork NSW strongly recommends businesses have trained Mental Health First Aiders in their organisations to help meet work health and safety obligations and provide appropriate support for staff wellbeing.

  • Delivery mode: 12 hours, face-to-face

  • Ideal group size: 12–24 participants

  • Accreditation: Certificate and 3-year accreditation as a Mental Health First Aider (after completing the course and online quiz). A 4-hour MHFA ‘refresher’ is available after three years. This is a fantastic course that provides participants a chance to refresh the skills in a safe supporting environment and gain a further 3 years accreditation.

Why it works

MHFA isn’t just about information. It’s about building confidence through practice. Participants take part in real scenarios, group activities, and discussions that make the learning practical and relevant. Every course reinforces the same truth: when people come together to learn, share, and support each other, powerful change happens.

Why it matters

By improving awareness and mental health literacy, MHFA reduces stigma, builds confidence, and strengthens communities. Participants often tell me that the course gave them the courage to have conversations they would have otherwise avoided— and sometimes, those conversations have not only changed but saved a life.
